MAPA January 2019 PSA

National Blood Donor Month

Since 1970, January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month.  It is the month when donations traditionally drop off – due to inclement weather and illnesses. Local Red Cross chapters need about 650 blood donors every day in order to meet the need. There is usually a 10 – 20% decrease in donations during the winter. Anyone age 17 or older, at least 5’1” and weighing at least 110 pounds can volunteer to donate.
One donation can save multiple lives. Here are the facts:

  • Just 1 donation can save up to 3 lives.
  • The average red blood cell transfusion is 3 pints (or 3 whole-blood donations).
  • More than 1 million people every year are diagnosed with cancer for the first time. Many of them will need blood—sometimes daily—during chemotherapy.
  • More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.
  • While 38% of the American population is eligible to give blood, only 2% actually donates.

Go to www.redcrossblood.org for more information, and to find the donation site nearest to your location.

MAPA December PSA

National Flu Vaccination Week

December 2 - 8 is National Flu Vaccination Week. The best way to prevent influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated. If you haven’t received your vaccination yet it is not too late. Avoiding contact with others who are ill isn’t always an option so:

  • Wash your hands with warm water and soap every time you shake hands or touch a surface that might be germ-covered.
  • Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you for times when you don’t have access to soap and water.
  • Take extra care to not touch your mouth, eyes, or nose without cleansing your hands first.

MAPA November PSA

Antibiotic Awareness Week

November 12 – 18 is Antibiotic Awareness Week. The goal is to decrease inappropriate / unnecessary use of antibiotics, help prevent antibiotic resistance and avoid side effects from misuse of antibiotics.

MAPA encourages you to download and print this brochure on Antibiotics Aren’t Always the Answer” to learn more.  Here are two very important facts:
•
Antibiotics do not work on viruses, such as colds and flu, or runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow, or green
• Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people get infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. At least 23,000 people die as a result.

MAPA September PSA

National Prevention Awareness Month

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness month.

Nearly 40,000 people in the United States die from suicide annually, or 1 person every 13 minutes. This exceeds the rate of death from homicide and AIDS combined. More people die by suicide than from automobile accidents.

While suicide is the second leading cause of death for those ages 15 to 34, in 2013 (the latest year for which data is available) the highest number of suicides among both men and women occurred among those aged 45 to 54. The highest rates of suicides (suicides per 100,000) occurred among men aged 75 and up and among women aged 45 to 54. [ https://www.samhsa.gov/suicide-prevention ]

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  That number is 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
